Quick Overview

What is Alphagan eye drops?

Alphagan eye drops are an ophthalmic dosage form used in the treatment of ocular hypertension (increased pressure in the eye) and glaucoma. It reduces the intraocular pressure inside the eyes. Glaucoma is a condition which elevates the intraocular pressure of the eyes and it causes the damage of the optic nerves and results in gradual loss of vision. The damage of the optic nerve is a very slow process and most of the times the patient is not aware of gradual loss of sight. Hence, to get rid of these problems use Alphagan to lower down the intraocular pressure.

Alphagan contains the active ingredient called Brimonidine, which is an alpha agonist drug. It acts on the alpha receptors present in blood vessels in the eyes. The intraocular pressure of the eye is maintained by a continuous flow of aqueous humor in the eye ball. In case of glaucoma outflow of aqueous humor is blocked and due to accumulation of aqueous humor the intraocular pressure gets increased. Brimonidine acts on the alpha receptors present on the ciliary body present on the blood vessels and causes constriction of blood vessels. It reduces the movement of aqueous humor from blood vessels in the eye ball and thus reduces the intraocular pressure.
